TypeScript surpasses Python as the top programming language on GitHub in 2025

GitHub has released its Octoverse 2025 report, revealing the most popular programming languages among developers worldwide.
For the first time, TypeScript has taken the top spot, overtaking Python, which had led the ranking for several years.

TypeScript grows over 60% and dominates the ecosystem

According to GitHub, TypeScript usage increased by more than 60%, surpassing 1 million active contributors.
The growth is largely driven by frameworks that use TypeScript by default and the rise of AI-assisted development, which benefits from strongly typed systems.

Python, now ranked second, remains a major force due to its role in AI, data science, and automation projects, totaling 2.6 million contributions in the past year.

JavaScript slips to third but remains essential

JavaScript now sits in third place, as more developers adopt TypeScript for its enhanced type safety and scalability.
Together, the two languages account for over 5.2 million contributors, representing about 3% of all active GitHub users.

GitHub noted that the rise of typed languages shows how AI is not only accelerating coding speed but also influencing which languages teams rely on for production-level code.

Brazil emerges as a global developer powerhouse

The report also highlights Brazil’s impressive 28.5% growth in developers, reaching 6.8 million users on the platform.
GitHub projects that by 2030, Brazil will surpass 19 million developers, overtaking China and entering the global top 3.

Currently, the United States, India, and China hold the top three positions, with Brazil ranked fourth.

Additionally, GitHub introduced Agent HQ, a new AI-powered tool designed to help developers automate workflows and integrate intelligent agents into their projects.
