Xbox under pressure: Microsoft targets 30% profit, cutting projects and raising prices

Microsoft is reportedly pressuring its Xbox division to reach profit margins around 30%, according to a Bloomberg report.
To achieve this, the company has canceled projects, raised prices, and laid off employees — a move shaking up the gaming industry.

In a statement, Microsoft said it aims to balance creativity, innovation, and sustainability, emphasizing a long-term vision for the gaming business.

New profit goals for Xbox

Executives have set a “30% accountability margin”, far higher than the industry’s 17–22% average.
Historically, Xbox titles operated at margins between 10% and 20%, prompting internal restructuring and stricter cost control.

Actions taken include:

  • Canceling major titles like Everwild and Perfect Dark reboot;
  • Studio layoffs and resource reallocation;
  • Raising Game Pass prices globally;
  • Prioritizing smaller, service-driven games with recurring revenue models.

The target was established in 2023 by CFO Amy Hood, focusing on improving operational efficiency.

Layoffs and project cancellations

Microsoft has cut about 4% of its global workforce — roughly 9,000 employees — with the Xbox division heavily affected.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer explained the move as a way to “position the team for long-term success and focus on strategic growth areas.”

Several studios were downsized or restructured, and multiple high-budget games were shelved in favor of safer, lower-cost projects.

Game Pass price hike and subscription overhaul

The Game Pass Ultimate subscription saw its price double in Brazil, from R$ 60 to R$ 120 per month, as part of the new strategy.
Microsoft justified the increase by citing new bundles such as Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Club, claiming it’s “adding more value to the plans.”

However, the hike sparked consumer complaints and even scrutiny from Brazil’s consumer protection agency (PROCON).

Xbox isn’t going anywhere: new console in development

Despite the restructuring, Microsoft insists that Xbox remains a core business.
Division president Sarah Bond confirmed that a next-generation console is already in prototype stage, developed in partnership with AMD.

“The next Xbox will come to life across console, PC, cloud, and handheld devices,” Bond said, reinforcing Microsoft’s vision of a unified gaming ecosystem.

Summary of Xbox’s new phase

  • Profit margin goal: 30%
  • Game Pass price increase
  • Layoffs and canceled projects
  • Shift to lower-cost, service-based games
  • Next-gen Xbox in active development

This marks a cultural shift inside Xbox — moving from creative freedom to financial discipline as Microsoft seeks to turn gaming into a high-margin business.
