Meta to shut down Messenger app for Windows and macOS in December

Meta has announced that the Messenger app for Windows and macOS will be discontinued on December 15, 2025.
After that date, the desktop version will no longer function or be available for download.

The company did not provide specific reasons for the decision but confirmed the change via its Help Center.
Users will receive in-app notifications in the coming weeks reminding them about the shutdown.

Messenger’s background

Launched as a standalone service in 2014, Messenger has always remained integrated with Facebook’s contact list.
A re-merging with Facebook was considered in 2023 but later abandoned.
The mobile apps for Android and iOS will continue to operate normally, as will the web version of Messenger.

Once the desktop versions are discontinued, users can continue chatting through:

• The Facebook app (Android and iOS);
• The Messenger mobile app, which remains active;

  Meta advises users to enable Messenger’s Secure Storage feature before December 15 to keep their chat history synced between mobile and web versions.
