Chrome to automatically disable annoying notifications soon

Google Chrome is preparing a new feature that will automatically disable annoying or unwanted site notifications.
The update, coming soon to Android and desktop versions, aims to reduce repetitive alerts and make browsing smoother and less distracting.

Google announced the feature on Friday (10) as part of its ongoing effort to improve the user experience and minimize unnecessary interruptions.

How the feature works

According to Google, the system will automatically revoke permissions from websites that send too many notifications but receive little to no user engagement.

The entire process happens in the background, without any manual action required.

When Chrome detects that a user ignores a site’s notifications:

• It will revoke the notification permission automatically;
• The browser will notify the user of the change;
• Users can manually restore permissions by navigating to Settings > Safety Check > View sites > Restore;
• The feature can also be disabled completely if preferred;
• Users can re-enable notifications directly from a site if they wish to continue receiving them.

Note: the system does not affect installed web apps — only notifications from regular websites.

Why is Google implementing this?

Google’s internal data shows that less than 1% of Chrome notifications receive clicks, meaning most alerts interrupt more than they help.

During initial tests, Chrome saw a significant drop in notification overload with minimal impact on engagement rates.
Interestingly, websites that send fewer alerts actually gained more clicks, as their notifications became more noticeable.

When will it be available?

The automatic notification disabling feature is still in testing, and no public release date has been announced.
It will first roll out to Chrome on Android and desktop, working similarly to how the browser already revokes unused permissions for location, camera, and microphone.

Once released, this feature will make Chrome a quieter, cleaner, and more user-friendly browser, focusing only on the alerts that truly matter.
